Frequently Asked Questions from Financial Math Applicants

(See also the Department's general Frequently Asked Questions on applying for graduate study at FSU.)

o How much does it cost to study at FSU? Do you give any financial aid?
o When do PhD students obtain a Major Professor?

All students intending the PhD in Financial Mathematics begin the program under the advisement of the Director, without a formal Major Professor. Students normally do not arrange to study with a particular professor in advance of arrival at FSU. Students spend their first year getting to know the faculty and their research. By their fourth semester, students must have the consent of a professor to serve as the Major Professor. A professor will agree to serve as Major Professor (or Co-Director) by mutual agreement between the student, the professor, and the Department Chair. After the Department Chair has appointed the Major Professor and Supervisory Committee, they take over responsibility for guiding the student's studies until graduation.

o If I am admitted to another area in mathematics at FSU (Pure Math, Applied/Computational Math, Biomath), can I later switch to Financial Math?

You have to apply again, to Financial Math, like a new student. Your application will be considered together with all new applications received that year. If you are a TA in another area, your current TA position does not automatically transfer to Financial Math.

o I am admitted without financial aid. Can I apply for financial aid after I start the program?

Several students in the past received teaching assistantships after they started the program. Depending on the available positions, teaching assistantships will be offered on a competitive basis. Your grades, whether you have passed any qualifiers, and support from a prospective major professor will be considered in the decision. Contact the Graduate Admissions Coordinator for information.

o What are the employment opportunities for the graduates of the program?

The graduates of our program are employed at various financial institutions across the US. Our alumni have worked at companies like Barclays Capital, Barra, Bell Trading, Centaurus, Citibank, Enron, Florida State Board of Administration, Florida Power and Light, ING, PanAgora, Putnam Investments, Liberty Mutual, UBS, Wisconsin State Board of Investment, and in academic positions.

o If I am admitted for the MS degree only, can I switch to the PhD?

If you applied for MS when you first applied to FSU, or if you were admitted as an MS student (even though you applied for PhD), you will need to submit an application if you want to switch to PhD. Contact the Graduate Admissions Coordinator for instructions.
