Internships

-----------------------------------------

Students are encouraged to explore internship opportunities in financial organizations to further improve their understanding of financial markets. Some organizations with internship programs are listed below. Students apply for these opportunities directly.

It is possible to obtain 1 hour credit for an internship, by registering for MAT 5945 (Graduate Professional Internship). You should obtain the Director's approval, and fill out the necessary paperwork (see Ms. Diaguila), before you start the internship. There is a form that needs to be signed by your supervisor at the organization where you will do internship. You also need to write a report of your activities as an intern.

o When can I register for an internship?
You can register for MAT 5945 in any semester, including summer.

o Do I need to register for classes if I want to do an internship in summer?
You need to register for MAT 5945 for one hour, if you want your internship to appear in your transcript. If you are an international student, you need to get authorization from the International Center (644-1702) and apply for Curricular Practical Training - your internship can be paid or unpaid, and you have to register for MAT 5945 for one hour and pay the resulting tuition and fees.

o Can I be paid as an intern?
If you are an international student, you should check with International Center (644-1702) to see if your visa status allows you to receive payment for work. The other restriction is whether you are a TA: A full-time TA cannot be paid as an intern. A half-time TA can receive payment for work performed up to 10 hours per week.

o How about the London internship opportunity?
This is an opportunity that may be available to students interested in international finance: the FSU London Center may be able to arrange an Internship at the London stock exchange or in a banking or financial institution. These are individually arranged in accordance with the student’s interests. Students with this interest should explore the website for the London Study Center http://www.fsu.edu/~london, or contact the International Program’s office (644-3272) for more information.
