Prerequisites

Prerequisites for Admission

To be admitted to the graduate program in Financial Math, you must have:

  1. taken math courses on the following subjects
    o Calculus 1, 2, and 3 (multivariate calculus)
    o Differential equations and linear algebra
    o Probability and Statistics
    o Real Analysis or Advanced Calculus is strongly recommended

  2. a Quantitative GRE score of at least 155 (new scale) or 700 (old scale)

  3. Some experience programming in a high level language such as Fortran, Java, or, preferably, C++ is needed before the start of the first Fall semester.

  4. for non-native English speakers, a TOEFL score of at least 550 on the paper-based test, 213 on the computer-based test, or 80 on the internet-based test, or else at least one year of prior study in an English-speaking country, and

  5. strong reference letters.

Notes:

o On programming: Our graduates applying for jobs as "Quants" in the financial sector normally need to show a good knowledge of C++. Our course in Scientific Programming in the first Fall semester helps to provide this. Prerequisite for this course is some experience with Java, Fortran, or C++ prior to entry. Students are encouraged to take programming as part of their undergraduate coursework. Admitted students unsure of their background are encouraged to consult Resources for C++ Programming for guidance with self-study during the summer before arrival at FSU.

o Economics and Finance: All students will take Financial Economics as part of the program. Though not required, it will be helpful if students take some economics as part of their undergraduate studies. A course in corporate finance or investments would also be useful.

o For PhD intenders: Students whose ultimate goal is the PhD should indicate this on the departmental application form. Success in reaching this goal usually requires a stronger mathematical background than needed by MS students. In particular, we recommend PhD intenders take a two-semester sequence of Advanced Calculus if possible, and/or several other math courses at the upper division level.
