  Summer Workshop in Mathematical Modeling
Summer Workshop in Mathematical Modeling for High School Juniors (2009)

Goals

The goal of this Workshop is to increase the skills of high school juniors in applying mathematics to science and engineering. The emphasis will be on problems arising from living systems. This is also an opportunity for HS students to sample an FSU college experience and to prepare themselves for a major in applied mathematics. The central theme of this experience will be modeling.

Dates

The program is two weeks long and will take place in July, running from Monday the 20th through Friday the 31st. The sessions will be 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Mondays to Fridays.

Benefits

In addition to learning about mathematical methods that are the foundation of modern science and technology, students who complete the Workshop will be awarded $150. Lunch will also be provided. The Workshop will close with a pizza party and short presentations where students will have a chance to celebrate their accomplishments.

Eligibility

The selection of students will be based upon the perceived potential to enroll and succeed in a college program. (Parents must be legal residents or citizens.)

o Each candidate must have completed least three science courses, including two courses chosen from biology, chemistry or physics.
o The candidates PSAT test score should be in the upper 20%; the (unweighted) HS GPA should be at least 3.0.
o Evidence of accomplishment in mathematics or the natural sciences such as MAT events, presentations at science fairs, or activity in clubs whose focus is mathematics or the natural sciences, will increase a candidate's chances of being accepted to the Program.
o A letter of recommendation from a mathematics or science teacher is required. Students will be will be recruited mainly from high schools in Leon and contiguous counties.
