Internship Description:
New York Life is seeking an actuarial intern to work in the Tampa
office
for the summer of 2008.
The internship will be project-oriented, lasting approximately 12
weeks.
The candidate should have strong analytical and communication
skills, be
detail-oriented and conscientious. Some exposure to spreadsheets such as
Excel is preferred.
The intern will gain exposure to various aspects of
actuarial work as well as the life insurance business overall.
Students should have at least one actuarial exam and not need
sponsorship
for full-time employment following graduation, as New York Life
does not
sponsor visas at this time.

Internship Salary Range:
Depends on the number of exams passed and experience, but students

expect to make over $875 a week.

Summary/Purpose of Position:
Assist the Actuary in the performance of his/her duties, with
primary
emphasis on assuring accurate calculations for statutory, tax and
GAAP
reserves for life and term products and immediate annuities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1.
Development and/or verification of statutory, tax and GAAP reserve
factors for life and term products.
2. Assist
in the development and review of related financial items,
including DAC amortization, claim liabilities and reinsurance
billing and
reporting.
3. Assist
in the verification of reserve calculations for immediate
annuities.
4. Timely
completion of ad hoc special projects as required.
Qualifications, Special Skills or Requirements:
1. 2 SOA
Exams
2.
Bachelors degree or equivalent experience. Good organizational
skills.
3. Strong
P/C skills, Lotus Notes, MS Excel, MS Word, MS Powerpoint, and
Showcase Analyzer (database tool).
4. Strong
analytic and problem solving skills.
Decision Making (Degree of Independence):
Works independently
Some decision making will be involved.
Scope Accountability:
Requires a high degree of personal accountability.
This position requires continued
adherence to the requirements of the
Actuarial Student Program, notably with regard to progress on the
actuarial
exams.
Communication/Contacts:
This position requires frequent communication in writing and in
person with
the other members of the Valuation area and the Actuarial Department, as
well as with Systems, Finance and New York actuarial staff, primarily in
the Office of the Chief Actuary.
