                 Actuarial Summer Internship

New York Life offers a Summer Actuarial Internship Program for undergraduate and graduate students, which combines relevant work experience with a series of actuarial classes and presentations. In addition, interns receive actuarial student mentors, and a number of group social events are planned to ensure that interns get the most out of their summer experience. The program is geared towards finding qualified candidates for our full-time actuarial program.

Work Experience — Interns are given projects from each area of our actuarial department and work side by side with actuaries and actuarial students. These projects provide them with useful actuarial experience while allowing them to develop their problem-solving and decision-making skills. Interns are able to demonstrate communication skills when they present their summer work to the actuarial students.

Classes & Presentations — The summer begins with a brief training session covering a range of topics including the Showcase software system and ALFA modeling software. In addition, company-wide bi-weekly intern meetings are scheduled. These meetings allow interns to interact with other interns from around the company while learning more about business operations from company leaders. The learning continues throughout the summer with monthly presentations made by New York Life actuaries.  Interns are also invited to attend the summer ACE (All-Campus Enrichment) Day. ACE Days are opportunities for students from all campuses to interact and partake in presentations and workshops designed to foster a broader knowledge of the company and the actuarial profession.  They also help develop important business skills such as communication, decision making, leadership, and corporate responsibility.

Social Events — Group outings are planned for the interns throughout the summer, ranging from sports games to volunteer events. In addition, interns are encouraged to join full-time actuarial students in social events including but not limited to team sports and post-exam gatherings.

Work & Compensation — In general, interns are scheduled to work from late May through mid-August.  Salaries are commensurate with the number of actuarial exams passed.
