and the application of optimization ideas to solve symmetric positive
definite linear systems of equations.

- Set 11 has been posted. It discusses Quasi-Newton (Secant) methods
for systems. You are not responsible for it on the exams.
- The solutions to Homework 8 have been posted early to assist
in your completion of Program 4.

- Since no objections have been made the Exam 2 plan has been updated
as now indicated on the Exam Information page.
- A request was made to change the time of Exam 2 due to overlap with an exam
in another class for which there is overlap in student population.
The request is that Exam 2 be distributed on the website on the morning
of Friday December 2 and due before class on Monday December 5. Any objections
must be made today November 28. If none are made the change will be posted this afternoon.
- Slide 42 in Set 9 modified to be clearer.
- A typo in the Comments on Program 3 has been fixed and the file reposted.
It is the existence of a vector v such that the transpose of L times that vector
is 0 that is required. Specifically, we know that at least L^Te_1=0.
The superscript T on L was missing at three points in the comments.

you read ahead in this Set and the associated sections in the Text.

- The due date of Program 3 has been moved to Monday November 21.
- Typos were fixed in the Solutions to Homework 6.
On page 3, the reordered matrix tilde(A)_1 should have
-2 as its (4,4) element. Note the determinant computation
uses the correct value. On page 4, the reordered matrix tilde(A)
should have elements (2,4) and (2,5) of -1 and 3 respectively.
Note this does not affect the subsequent determinants or eigenvalue
discussion. The corrected solutions have been posted.
