Meeting time and place: M 2:30-3:20 - HWC 2400 TR 2:00-3:15 - HWC 2400
Instructor: Eriko Hironaka
Office: LOV 210A, Phone: 644-1587
Office Hours: TBA

Required Text: Linear Algebra and its applications, 4th Edition by David Lay, published by Addison Wesley.
Eligibility: You must have completed MAC 2312 (Calc II) or the equivalent with a grade of C- or better, or have permission from the instructor.
Course Content: The course will cover basic topics in linear algebra such as vector spaces and subspaces, linear transformations, Gaussian elimination, matrix algebra, determinants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, inner products, and applications such as the least squares problems.
Course Objectives: This course introduces students to key notions and methods that are fundamental to a variety of problems in data analysis and modeling. Lectures, supplemented by the textbook, homework exercises, and quizzes, will emphasize useful concepts and techniques for simplifying and solving large classes of mathematical problems. Linear algebra is founded on a rich interplay between algebra and geometry. This course will also expose students to some of the principles behind the methods.
Homework and Quizzes: Homework will be assigned daily and will be announced in class and on the course webpage. Homework should not be turned in, but will be discussed in the beginning of the following class period. Quizzes based on the homework will be given every Thursday during class except on weeks when a midterm is being given. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped.
Exams: There will be two midterm examinations, and a final examination. The tentative dates are:
Midterms: Oct. 2, Oct. 30
Final: Monday 7:30am - 9:30am
Grades: Grades will be based on the quiz grade average (Qu), the midterm exams grade average (Mid), and the cummulative final exam grade (Fin). The course grade will be the maximum of
.4*Qu + .3*Mid + .3*Fin
and
.2*Qu + .2*Mid + .6*Fin.
A course grade of incomplete (I) will not be given to replace a grade of D or F, or to provide additional study time. Failure to process a course drop by the university deadline will result in a course grade of F.
Exam policy: An absence from a quiz or test may be excused if the student presents sufficient evidence of extenuating circumstances (please notify the instructor prior to the quiz or test when possible). There will be no make-up quizzes. For missed quizzes with an excused absence the average of the remaining grades will be used. An unexcused missed quiz will count as a zero grade.
University Attendance Policy: Excused absences include documented illness, deaths in the family and other documented crises, call to active military duty or jury duty, religious holy days, and official University activities. These absences will be accommodated in a way that does not arbitrarily penalize students who have a valid excuse. Consideration will also be given to students whose dependent children experience serious illness.
Academic Honor Policy: The Florida State University Academic Honor Policy outlines the University's expectations for the integrity of students' academic work, the procedures for resolving alleged violations of those expectations, and the rights and responsibilities of students and faculty members throughout the process. Students are responsible for reading the Academic Honor Policy and for living up to their pledge to ". . . be honest and truthful and . . . [to] strive for personal and institutional integrity at Florida State University." (Florida State University Academic Honor Policy, found at http://dof.fsu.edu/honorpolicy.htm.)
Americans With Disabilities Act: Students with disabilities needing academic accommodation should:
(1) register with and provide documentation to the Student Disability Resource Center; and
(2) bring a letter to the instructor indicating the need for accommodation and what type. This should be done during the first week of class.
