Abstract: We review recent applications of Floer homology and holomorphic curves to the dynamics of area-preserving surface diffeomorphisms and to Reeb dynamics and present work in progress on counts of holomorphic pairs of pants in $\mathbb{R}\times Y$ for $Y$ an Anosov or pseudo-Anosov mapping torus and potential applications
