Each graduate student's progress toward their degree is overseen by the Director of Pure Math who is available throughout the year for consultations and advice. A student's continued funding depends on their timely progress through their degree requirements. During the second semester of each year, students will be asked to write up a brief report on their activities. The Associate Chair for Graduate Studies will use these reports and consult with the Director to determine continued funding for Teaching Assitants. Upon arrival each graduate student will be assigned a faculty mentor. The role of the faculty mentor is to be available to students for general guidance on academic matters until the student starts work with a major professor. The current list of mentors and major professors will be updated as the need arises. As the student gets closer to finishing their qualification requirements, they begin to look for a major professor and a supervisory committee, to supervise their Candidacy Examination. The choice of major professor must be made carefully, since, once the agreement is made, he or she will typically supervise the student's work toward a PhD. After achieving candidacy, the student begins work on their PhD. From that point, the student's courses and thesis work will be guided primarily by the major professor and dissertation committee. |
