Pure Mathematics - Graduate Program - Grids and Registration

Registration Checklist 2009-2010
-----------------------------------------
University registration deadlines can be found at the FSU registration website. Registration for continuing students (including first year students entering in Summer C session) must be completed before midnight July 31. The late fee is $100 per course. For new students, the registration window is: 8am, Aug. 17 - midnight Aug. 21. During the first week of classes, Aug. 23 - Aug. 27 students may drop/add with an adjustment of fees. This period is sometimes called the "shopping period".

Registration (Deadline: continuing non-TA's July 31, continuing TA's July 29, new graduate students Aug. 21) means course registration. You must register to make sure you get credit for course work, and that you meet minimum credit hours requirements for your teaching assistantship as well for your eventual degrees. Because registration information is a reference for the grid, teaching assistants are asked to register two days earlier than the University deadline.

Grids (TA's only) (Deadline: noon July 29, except for new graduate students) refers to a schedule that you give to Will Stiles who is in charge of assigning your TA duties. You will receive information directly from Will Stiles by email with detailed information about how to fill in your grids.

There are several technical reason for doing the registration and the grid separately. One is that while most courses or seminars form time constraints in scheduling TA classes, some courses do not meet at any specific time, and do not conflict with TA duties. Another is that some rules regarding registration may make it necessary to fill out portions of the grid for which students have not officially registered for a course. (These special cases, for example when a student wishes to try out some courses during the drop/add week before finalizing their selection, must be discussed ahead of time with the program director.)

Credit Hours University regulations require filling 12 credit hours (Florida residents, University sponsored Fellowship recipients, and citizens of certain designated Latin American countries) or 9 credit hours (non-Florida residents without University sponsored Fellowships). This does not include English language courses and TA courses.

Course Selection Students should read the program webpages to make sure they are on track with program benchmarks. Course selection should always be made in consultation with a program faculty advisor.
