Prerequisite: A grade of C- or better in Topology I (MTG 5326), or consent of instructor.

Text: The required text is Algebraic Topology, by Allen Hatcher, published by Cambridge University Press. The book is available for free download on Professor Hatcher's website: http://www.math.cornell.edu/~hatcher/AT/ATpage.html It is also for sale as a hardcopy, and is not too expensive.

Course Content: Chapters 0 and 1 of the text.

Course Objectives:  Having learned the basics of pointset topology in Topology I, the student will now learn the beautifully intertwined theories of fundamental groups and covering spaces. This material serves as an introduction to both homotopy theory and algebraic topology, and is an important part of the topology qualifying exam.

Tests:  There will be two tests and a final exam. The dates of the tests will be announced at least a week in advance.

Homework:  Homework will be assigned, collected, and graded approximately once a week. You should be sure to allow plenty of time for these problems. They will involve both proofs and examples. Please start the homework early, so that if you have trouble you can come to office hours. I don't mind if you collaborate on the HW, but each student must hand in his or her own solutions, and if someone helped you, you should acknowledge that on your HW.

Grading:  Your final grade will be computed as follows:

Final Examination: The Final Exam is on Thursday, May 1, 3-5 pm.

Graduate vs. Undergraduate Course Numbers: A few students in the class are taking it under a 4000-level course number. Those taking the class under a graduate number will be required to present the solution of at least one HW problem to the class during the semester. For those taking it under the undergraduate number, this presentation will be optional, but I hope you will still volunteer.

Attendance/Makeup Policy: Please do not miss any class unless absolutely necessary.  If you miss a class period, you are still responsible for learning the material covered on the day you missed, and also for any work which was assigned on the day you missed.  If you miss a test or exam because of an unexcused absence, you will receive a 0 on that test or exam.  If you miss a test or exam because of an excused absence, I will allow you to make up the points by some method (possibly by increasing the value of your final exam), at my discretion. For an absence to be excused, you must either get my approval in advance or, in case of illness, bring me a note from a doctor specifically stating that you were too sick to be there. (A note stating simply that you were seen that day by a doctor will not suffice.) Homework must be handed in on time. If it is late, I may not accept it at all, or at least I will penalize the grade on that homework.

University Attendance Policy: Excused absences include documented illness, deaths in the family and other documented crises, call to active military duty or jury duty, religious holy days, and official University activities. These absences will be accommodated in a way that does not arbitrarily penalize students who have a valid excuse. Consideration will also be given to students whose dependent children experience serious illness.
