Abstract. The Navier-Stokes alpha-model equations represent a nonlinearly dispersive approach to modeling subgrid scale turbulence in fluids. After discussing the theoretical framework for deriving these equations, Holm will describe analytic and computational studies that illustrate their effectiveness as a large eddy simulation (LES) model.
