Prerequisites: Multivariable Calculus and elements of Linear Algebra.
Text: Differential Geometry of Curves and Surfaces by Manfredo P. do Carmo. Prentice Hall, 1976.
Course content: Chapters 1-4 and selected topics from chapter 5.
Course objectives: This course is an introduction to differential geometry and is aimed at a broad audience of mathematics and science students. The focus will be on the study of the geometry of curves and surfaces in 3-dimensional Euclidean space, with additional topics in the theory of abstract surfaces. The course will cover classical material that will prepare the students for more advanced studies and to apply the techniques of differential geometry to a variety of problems.
Grading: There will be three take-home tests and several homework assignments. Your work will be weighted as follows: tests - 25% each; homework and class participation - 25%. Letter grades will be based on numerical grades in the usual way. (A: 90-100, B: 80-89, C: 70-79, D: 60-69, with +/- grades assigned at the discretion of the instructor.) A grade of I will not be given to avoid a D or an F, or to provide additional study time. Failure to process a course drop will result in a course grade of F.
Honor code: The Academic Honor System at The Florida State University is based on the premise that each student has the responsibility 1) to uphold the highest standards of academic integrity in the student's own work, 2) to refuse to tolerate violations of academic integrity in the University community, and 3) to foster a high sense of integrity and social responsibility on the part of the University community.
American Disabilities Act: Students with disabilities needing academic accommodations should register with and provide documentation to the Student Disability Resource Center (SDRC), and bring a letter from the SDRC to the instructor indicating their needs. This should be done within the first week of class.
