Master of Science, Financial Mathematics

As described in the Graduate Bulletin, MS (M.S.) degree option (C) is an interdisciplinary program intended to prepare students for work in financial institutions and markets or as a basis to continue to the PhD. Specialized courses in computational and theoretical mathematics, statistics, economics, and finance are required. Individual supervisory committees direct the choice of courses within program Requirements and Guidelines. Students are encouraged to participate in an internship.

An optional concentration in Actuarial Science is possible within the Financial Mathematics master’s degree when all required courses in the FinMath master’s program are completed. MAP 5177-5178 (Actuarial Models; Loss and Stochastic Models) are required and some relevant electives from the Department of Risk Management and Insurance may be available. Applicants should indicate their interest in this option when applying for admission. (For other graduate study options in Actuarial Science at FSU, go to FSU Actuarial Science after a Bachelor's Degree.)

  Doctor of Philosophy, Financial Mathematics

The PhD (Ph.D.) in Financial Mathematics builds on the courses in the FSU Master’s degree, or their equivalent, and features research in a mathematical area related to or with applications in mathematical finance or mathematical economics. The faculty work in diverse research areas of interest to students with academic and/or financial industry as employment goals. A student may also choose to complete the master’s degree in Financial Mathematics in conjunction with doctoral work in a participating department. Students interested in the doctorate should consult early in their programs with the Program Director and faculty members on their Supervisory Committee to be sure they complete the appropriate mathematics qualifier sequences in a timely manner.
