Hour Tests 2 and 3 will 10/26 and 11/23; note that although the first day mod041 syllabus said "10/26 and 11/30" were "most likely", we are requested not to give tests in the last class week before exams, and there is only one class week after Thanksgiving hence the 3rd test must be BEFORE. (I wouldn't schedule a test on Wed. before, but Tues should be OK.)
Reminder: BRING CALCULATORS (and of course texts) to class EACH DAY.
PRESENTATIONS: As part of your Professionalism component, one or more problems, supplemental ones that I state or from the R ones possibly with modifications, will be assigned individually to each student for Class Presentations. There will be 1 or more of these each class day except test days beginning 10/14. The first three such are assigned below denoted P1, P2, P3. You may make Power Point slides or get pens & transparencies from Ms. Travis in 208 LOV (show her this). Graduate students can make copies and Mr. Hill will make copies for u'grads if you e-mail him ahead (khill@math.fsu.edu) and meet him 10 minutes before class. Put in ALL the steps (the answer book is insufficient) but don't use TOO many pages! You must work through each step and show the mechanics as well as the method/theory. In past years we have found the blackboard too slow, and "live" Power point presentations often run into tech. glitches (tho I'd love you to do them.)
Here is pacing for the next few classes --- mod045 will be handed out around 10/21, to fine tune as accurately as possible and keep us on pace. Several students have mentioned 11/11 plans made before the hurricanes, and if I can be sure we are on a reasonable pace I will announce on mod045 that we will not meet that day; there will be a very significant hand in assignment due 11/15.
BEFORE THE CLASS ON DATE BELOW, YOU SHOULD:
10/11. e-mail questions about II Unit 1 by Sun noon. See the handout notes pages 107/5-6 and work through the details of the PATHOLOGY problems there. Also read ahead II-2, p. 55-top p.65. Do 2N[1] (not to hand in).
10/12. Quiz on "problems" first in 201 (see suggestions notes 1011/1). Then divide up for Study Groups. Before Tues, study for the exam you are preparing for but note that the first 20 minutes of class will be Quiz on Problems Unit 1 excluding the "pathologies" [no non-level benefits; non-compound interest]. (Reminder --- Mr. Hill get master key before quiz maybe so we can get people settled quickly; also know in advance whether 112 MCH will be available for a group --- can ask Ms. Diaguila?)
10/14. Reports from second Study Group leaders due. P1: II-1R[Non-level benefit examples: 76 and 77]. Problem summary from 1R[58,59,64,67,76,77,78]. Before class study the Unit 2 content; compute nsp of whole life and temporary annuities (both life annuities due and continuous life annuities) using both the aggregate payment and current payment methods. de Moivre! constant force! nanoes! ILT! Also, be able to derive the Basic Insurance Identity linking whole life and life annuities (p. 58) and also n-year endowment and n-year temporary annuities. All of this is on p. 74 and it is VERY important and will be derived in class. Understand 2N[1,4,5,6]; 2M[1-6 - note that 4,5,6 have data given from ILT which you should be able to use directly]; R2[consider 98(a,b), 100, 102, (Adv. 105), 106, 107, 114, (Adv. 117-120)]. See class notes for comments about B.I.I.; also other formulas you should learn in CRNAT.
10/18. Be sure you understand the theory and problems listed for 10/14 above with special attention to problems TBA announced 10/14 in class; e-mail questions by Sat 10/16 6 pm! P2: Non-compound interest - Compare cost of whole life payable at death sold to (20) assuming De Moivre mortality assuming: (a) compound interest = 6%; (b) simple interest = 6%.
10/19. VERY VERY VERY short quiz on definitions and B.I.I., Unit 2. P3: II-2R[107 and 114]. We will complete II Unit 2 content as assigned for 10/14.
Note that before 10/20: Students should e-mail problems on II-1&2 BEFORE Wed 10/20 at 6 pm. Warning: Dr. Case will not be checking e-mails on 10/24-26 so all questions prior to the 10/26 test must be asked by 10/20.
10/21. mod045 handed out summarizing problems in Unit 2. In class wrap up Review for Test 2. Introduction of Unit 3 (Premiums). P4: II-2R[117-120].
10/25. is an individual study day, the last for all students. You may decide whether to study in a group or individually, and each student must hand in a sheet either joining a group or giving a sentence what you did individually to use the time wisely.
10/26. Second Hour Test, II-Units 1&2.
10/27. Hand in assignment in Unit 3 TBA. Results of 2nd PRACTICE EXAM UNDER TEST CONDITIONS must be reported to Dr. Case:
(a) how many total minutes did you work? (should use FOUR HOURS!)
(b) was your work time broken, or continuous - describe.
(c) how many problems were on the exam and how many did you attempt? (Report as x/y).
(d) how many did you answer correctly?
