The department offers the opportunity for an M.S. "Directed Program of Study" in both Pure Mathematics and in Applied and Computational Mathematics. This may be attractive to the student with a particular employment goal (such as teaching at the Community College level, or certain jobs in industry, technology or government) or an atypical future study goal. Such a program requires early planning with and approval of the area Director and the Graduate Chair. Substitutes are planned for a few of the usually required courses in one of the participating areas; these must meet a "coherence of purpose" test and hence form a concentration of graduate study which is motivated by the student's goal.
