DOCTORAL STUDENT ORGANIZERS OF THE GRADUATE STUDENT SEMINAR
Fall 2007 – Spring 2009
Graduate Student Seminar Organizers
MAP 6939 — the Graduate Student Seminar — organized and run entirely by doctoral students. The picture above — in Tallahassee midwinter 2009 — includes 7 of these 8 recent organizers. We're sure the other, now busy as a postdoc, is honored to have Professor Dirac agree to stand in for her in the picture! The activity has been in place a dozen years; it was restructured two years ago so that a fresh pair of co-organizers bring new ideas each semester and then arrange successor organizers from enthusiastic volunteers so there is informal rotation from the four areas.
The organizers for Fall 2009 have just posted an invitation to second-year and higher PhD students, and they describe the seminar emphasis as “talks given by fellow graduate students in Applied, Bio, Financial, and Pure mathematics”, explaining “professors do not attend unless they are invited by the speaker.” They describe further: “Some graduate students find the GSS ... helpful for the interesting research topics ... useful to prepare for an upcoming seminar, ATE, or dissertation talk by speaking to peers first ... a nice place to learn about mathematics from fellow graduate students.”
