DOCTORAL STUDENT ORGANIZERS OF THE GRADUATE STUDENT SEMINAR
Fall 2007 – Spring 2011
MAP 6939-xy the Graduate Student Seminar — is organized and run entirely by doctoral students. This department tradition provides leadership experience. Students vet upcoming candidacy and PhD defense talks for each other (and win prizes for the "best", as judged by their peers). They invite speakers and plan discussions about portfolio building, responsible research, and other professional development aspects - and JOBS. It is a registered activity sponsored by the Grad Chair, but she or other professors may not attend (unless - a rare honor - one is invited to talk).
Tallahassee weather — since we are in Florida, some assume it is always summer. But Tallahassee officially claims four seasons — and some years there is a little snow. Perhaps more accurately, think of three seasons — Brrrr, Nice, Hot. Looking closely at these pictures, you see Above that Nov. 2010, is the Nice season. Below, Jan. 2009, is in the Brrrr season. Most of each year is in the Nice season — most all of about six of the months, and some days in each of the other months.
Above (Nov. 2010) are the organizers for Fall 2009 through Spring 2011 — joining P.A.M. Dirac on his pedastal outside the Dirac Science Library.
Below are 7 of the 8 organizers Fall 2007 through Spring 2009. The other was at her postdoc before the Winter 2009 picture; she is happy to have Professor Dirac stand in for her!
