Sturm's Theorem And Some Examples Using Maple, I

Given a polynomial with real coefficients, there are methods to determine the possible number of real roots of that polynomial. (For example, Descarte's Rule of Signs and the Fourier-Budan Theorem.) However, this number may differ by an even amount. Sturm's Theorem provides a method by which one can find the exact number of real roots (not counting multiplicities) in a given interval. This talk will explain the procedure and then take a look at a Maple program which implements the procedure.

Universal Parameter Spaces of Riemann Surfaces & String Theory

Defs: \Mg={\cal M}_g, \Tg={\cal T}_g, \Tin={\cal T}_{\infty}
Polyakov's bosonic string theory produces a natural and fundamental measure on each of the Teichm\"uller spaces, $\Tg$. The space $\Tg$ is a $(3g-3)$ dimensional complex manifold parametrizing all compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g(>1)$. For non-perturbative string theory it is important to understand the Polyakov measure on a universal parameter space of Riemann surfaces that contains simultaneously surfaces of arbitrary genus.
In recent joint work with Indranil Biswas and Dennis Sullivan, [{\it Acta Mathematica}, v. 176, 1996, and {\it Contemporary Math., Amer. Math. Society}, Bers Colloquium volume], we have shown how to construct the equivariant universal Polyakov-Mumford structure over such a universal Teichm\"uller space, $\Tin$; this $\Tin$ is the direct limit of the universal tower of the classical Teichm\"uller spaces $\Tg$. The universal commensurability modular group acts on $\Tin$, and our entire construction is modular invariant.

Mathematical Modeling of Medical Images
Many studies of medical images involve developing algorithms for determining the similarities between images obtained by using various scanning modalities on various subjects. We will talk about the mathematics behind a proposed new transform method used for analysis of 2D and 3D images of the human brain. In particular, we will discuss the discrete fractal and the discrete wavelet transformations, some of their properties and applications.
