Inherently Parallel Algorithms for Time Dependent Partial Differential Equations
There are two classical approaches to obtain inherently parallel algorithms for time dependent partial differential equations: waveform relaxation and domain decomposition. After a brief review of those approaches, we introduce a new class of algorithms: Overlapping Schwarz Waveform Relaxation. Algorithms in this class solve time dependent subproblems obtained by splitting the spatial domain. We present recently obtained convergence results for these types of algorithms for parabolic and hyperbolic problems. Then we isolate the key factor determining the convergence rate, namely the rate of information exchange between subproblems. We show that this rate can be greatly enhanced by using absorbing boundary conditions at the artificial interfaces. This improves the convergence rate of the algorithms drastically and leads to algorithms which converge even without overlap. We present analytical and numerical results for two model problems.
