Vector Fields and Characteristic Classes, a Survey
-
The Euler-Poincar'e characteristic measures the obstruction
to the construction of (continuous) vector fields on smooth manifolds.
The generalizations of Chern, in the case of analytic manifolds, and
of M.H. Schwartz, in the case of analytic varieties, extend the
obstruction theory to the construction of frames. The lecture will be
a survey about these constructions, leading to the definition of the
classical Chern classes and of the Schwartz-MacPherson classes.
