Pi Mu Epsilon is a national scholarly society in mathematics which consists of chapters at various colleges and universities; it was first incorporated in 1914 as sequel to an earlier mathematics club (1903) at Syracuse University. Each chapter is designated by the state in which it is located, and by the Greek letters, alpha, beta, etc., according to the chronological order of the dates on the University's chapter, the second in Florida is "Florida Beta" (and the University of Miami is "Florida Alpha"). The chapter at Florida State University was established in 1956 as sequel to an earlier local mathematics club but did not send registrations to the national organization in the years 1979-1994. The organization is described under Academic Honor Societies in the FSU General Bulletin.

Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible for membership, and the overall class ranking as well as mathematics credits and grades for membership are prescribed by national criteria. Members also participate in one or more of the student organizations in the department.
