Detailed description of research

My research concerns the topology and geometry of low-dimensional geometric objects, such as algebraic plane curves, knots and links, and surfaces. Recently, my research has focused on the minimization problem for dilatations of pseudo-Anosov mapping classes. Intuitively, the problem is to find the best way to move the points of a surface around so that there is eventual thorough mixing, but small average distortion. As we change the surface, the minimal average distortion or dilatation, also changes. The goal is to determine the minimal dilatation that can occur in terms of the topology of the surface.
