Postdoctoral Position - Sir James Lighthill Postdoctoral Scholar

The College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Mathematics at Florida State University seek applicants for the position of Sir James Lighthill Postdoctoral Scholar. The purpose of the Sir James Lighthill Postdoctoral Scholar Program is to provide multiyear support for early career development of recent Ph.D. recipients with the diversity and depth of skills required to contribute significant advances in multidisciplinary research in mathematics, computing, and applications in science and engineering.

Applicants with interests in all areas of applied and computational mathematics will be considered, but priority will be given to those whose research interests complement the interests and strengths of the Sir James Lighthill Professor's research program (www.cespr.fsu.edu). The position carries an initial appointment of two years, renewable for a third year contingent on performance. The recipient will teach one course per semester on topics that balance the needs of the Department of Mathematics and the research agenda of the Sir James Lighthill Postdoctoral Scholar Program. The courses may be at the undergraduate or graduate level.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in mathematics or a closely related field at the time of appointment. Preference will be given to applicants who have received their Ph.D. within the last three years. Applicants must present evidence of outstanding accomplishments and promise in multidisciplinary research. Applications should include a cover letter, a standard AMS cover sheet, a current CV, a description of current and planned research, and a statement of teaching philosophy. They should be submitted electronically through https://www.mathjobs.org/jobs/jobs/12518. Additionally, applicants should arrange to have three recommendation letters commenting on the applicant's research accomplishments and potential uploaded directly by their reference writers to mathjobs.org.

The starting date of the position is flexible but will be no later than August 2019. Review of applications will begin on November 15, 2018 and continue until the position is filled. Early application is encouraged.

Florida State University (www.fsu.edu) is an R1 institution within the twelve member State University System of Florida. The Department of Mathematics (www.math.fsu.edu) is a thriving, collaborative, and highly productive research and teaching environment with approximately 45 faculty members and postdoctoral researchers. Research activities range from pure mathematics - including analysis, geometry, topology, and probability - to computational mathematics - including fundamental numerical methods for differential and integral equations, stochastic computation and optimization - to applications of mathematics - including geometric and topological data analysis, fluid dynamics, aeroacoustics, biomathematics, and financial mathematics. Many members of the department have diverse research interests and collaborations across boundaries between areas of mathematics and with faculty members in other departments and universities. This environment will provide the support and encouragement needed for the Sir James Lighthill Postdoctoral Scholar to engage in successful multidisciplinary research.
