APPLIED LINEAR ALGEBRA I
Fall 2020

Instructor: Amod Agashe Email: agashe (the symbol at) math.fsu.edu
Office Hours: To be announced.

Warning: This is NOT the final version of the syllabus.
Prerequisites. Credit for Calculus II (MAC 2312 or equivalent) with a grade of C- or better.
Text. Linear Algebra and Its Applications by Lay, Lay, and McDonald. Addison-Wesley, 6th edition. We will be using MyLab Math for homeworks and some tests, and you are required to have access to it.
Course Content. Most of chapters 1, 2, 5, and 6: the plan is to cover sections 1.1--1.9, 2.1--2.3, 2.8--2.9, 5.1--5.4, and as much of Chapter 6 as time permits; but the plan is subject to change. The material includes the study of systems of linear equations, matrix algebra, vector spaces, linear transformations, eigenvalues, eigenvectors, inner-product spaces, orthogonal projections, etc.
Course Objectives. Linear algebra provides fundamental methods and tools for modeling and analysing data in a vast array of problems arising in the sciences and engineering. Data mining, image analysis, and computer graphics are some examples of modern applications where the methodology of linear algebra has played an important role. The main goal of the course is to introduce students to the theoretical and computational components of the discipline, emphasizing the applicability of the methods and techniques discussed.
Grading There will be weekly homeworks, several short quizzes, two unit tests (midterm exams), and a final exam. HonorLock will be used for remote proctoring of examinations. The dates for the quizzes will be announced in class about a week ahead of each quiz. The tests are tentatively scheduled for Oct 1 and Oct 29 (both Thursdays), to be held during the lecture time. The final exam is scheduled on Dec 8 (Tuesday) from 8am--10am. Your work will be weighed as follows: homeworks -- 5%, quizzes -- 14%; first unit test - 22%; second unit test - 27%; final exam - 32%. You will get to drop one (your worst) homework and quiz grade. A grade of I will not be given to avoid a D or an F, or to provide additional study time. Failure to process a course drop will result in a course grade of F.
Exam Policy. No makeup quizzes or exams will be given. An absence from a quiz or test may be excused if the student presents sufficient evidence of extenuating circumstances and gets permission BEFORE the quiz/test (unless it is an emergency). Absences from tests or quizzes due to family social events will not be excused. If a test absence is excused, then the final exam grade will be used for the missing grade. For an excused quiz absence, the next exam grade will be used for the missing grade.
University Attendance Policy. Excused absences include documented illness, deaths in the family and other documented crises, call to active military duty or jury duty, religious holy days, and official University activities. These absences will be accommodated in a way that does not arbitrarily penalize students who have a valid excuse. Consideration will also be given to students whose dependent children experience serious illness.
Academic Honor Policy. The Florida State University Academic Honor Policy outlines the University's expectations for the integrity of students' academic work, the procedures for resolving alleged violations of those expectations, and the rights and responsibilities of students and faculty members throughout the process. Students are responsible for reading the Academic Honor Policy and for living up to their pledge to ". . . be honest and truthful and . . . [to] strive for personal and institutional integrity at Florida State University." (Florida State University Academic Honor Policy, found at http://fda.fsu.edu/Academics/Academic-Honor-Policy)
Americans With Disabilities Act. Students with disabilities needing academic accommodation should:
(1) register with and provide documentation to the Office of Accessibility Services; and
(2) request a letter from the Office of Accessibility Services to be sent to the instructor indicating the need for accommodation and what type; and
(3) meet (in person, via phone, email, skye, zoom, etc...) with each instructor to whom a letter of accommodation was sent to review approved accommodations.

This syllabus and other class materials are available in alternative format upon request.
