MGF1106 Mathematics For Liberal Arts
Lecture Section 0001 MTWRF 8:00 am - 9:20 am
Lab Sections 0002-0005 meet on Wednesdays and Fridays in HTL 0113 or 01114
WELCOME to Mathematics For Liberal Arts. This course is
especially intended for students who will major in areas which do
not require further mathematics. We hope that your interest in
mathematics will be stimulated in new ways at the same time you are
perfecting basic logical and mathematical skills.
ELIGIBILITY The suggested prerequisite is two years of high
school algebra. Business, science, mathematics and computer science
majors should not take this course because it does not serve as a
prerequisite for the required courses in those areas. You MAY take MGF1106 after MAC1105.
CREDIT You may not receive credit for MGF1106 if you have
already earned a C- or better in MGF1106.
To receive liberal studies credit, you must pass with a C or better.

Test 3: Wednesday July 31 in LAB.
Final exam: Date/time/location varies; see below
MISSED TESTS
Students must provide advance notice of absences (when possible) as well as relevant documentation
regarding absences to the instructor as soon as possible following the illness or event that led to an absence.
Regardless of whether an absence is excused or unexcused, the student is responsible for making up all work that is missed.
See the "University Attendance Policy" below for acceptable reasons for an excused absence.
Any medical excuse must state explicitly that the holder should be excused from class.
Note that students will not be given excused absences to attend family functions or other non-academic events.
Official University activities include official events at which the student is representing the University,
such as athletic competitions and academic activities sponsored by a student's academic department or college. R
egistered Student Organizations (RSOs) and Greek Life activities are not considered official university activities.
The paragraph "Quizzes" below has more details about excused absences and documentation.
If a test absence is excused, then a make up exam will be arranged.
Students must bring FSU ID cards to all exams.
In the case of a missed test, <--
you must bring your original hard copy documentation to Ms. Harris within on week of returning to school.
See "QUIZZES" for more information about excused absences.
All lab assignments (Tests 1, 2, 3, and quizzes) must be taken with the lab class
in which you are officially enrolled. You cannot take any test or quiz in a different section, so don't even ask.
QUIZZES Your quiz average is one component of your grade (see
GRADING, below). Expect to be given a quiz each of the days you have Lab (twice per week in summer) in your
lab meeting (except on days when you will take a test instead). Exceptions: your lab class will not meet on Friday July 5 (holiday) or Friday August 2 (the last Test will be given Wednesday July 31).
You must take quizzes in the lab class in which you are officially enrolled.
Quizzes will usually involve problems of the type assigned for homework. There are no
make-ups for missed quizzes. If you miss a quiz due to a documented, unavoidable reason
(such as hospitalization, mandatory attendance at a university
sponsored event, or attending the funeral of a member of your immediate family), then the score of zero for the missed quiz score will not count in your quiz average.
Documentation must be provided. Medical excuses must state specifically that
you were not permitted to attend school; merely visiting a health professional does not
constitute a valid excuse. Hard copy documentation must be provided to Ms. Harris within one week of your return to school.
Electronic copies are not accepted as excuse documentation.
Late documentation will not be accepted. Generally, transportation problems, attendance at family events,
visiting sick friends or relatives, or "my family needed me at home"
do not constitute valid excuses. Foul weather is not an acceptable excuse, unless the University cancels classes. If your class is unable to
take a quiz due to technical problems, class cancellation, or any other reason, then the missed quiz will be treated in the same
way as an excused absence.
Class participation (iClicker) points are extra credit that get added to your quiz average.
-->
INTERNET HOMEWORK Each week you should expect to have one or more homework assignments, to be completed by
logging in to the eGrade Internet software. You will be able
to try each assignment three times; the higher of the three scores will be retained.
You will have several days to work on each homework assignment. Each assignment will be intended to prepare you for an upcoming test or quiz.
For that reason, among others, it is a bad idea to wait until after the test or quiz before doing the homework.
Do not
wait until the last minute to attempt the homework. If you procrastinate, and then find that you are
unable to complete the
assignment because of computer problems or other misfortune, your score will be zero.
You are always welcome to print homework problems and bring them to lecture class for explanation.
Your instructor will usually have time to work at least a few homework problems at the beginning of each lecture class.
INTERNET TESTING and HOMEWORK All of your tests,
quizzes and homework assignments
will be done over the Internet, either from a computer in your lab classroom or (in the case of Internet homework) from some other site.
Grade concerns related to the eGrade testing software will be referred to and resolved by appropriate
authorities within the Department of Mathematics.
ATTENDANCE AND DAILY WORK Please turn off your phone during class.
A student absent from class bears
the full responsibility for all subject matter and procedural
information discussed in class. Whether or not the instructor
checks roll, the student's responsibility is not diminished. Lecture attendance is not mandatory.
Although there is no penalty for absence from lecture class, if you do attend, you must arrive on time and stay for the entire class.
Class participation (CP) points are extra credit that improve your quiz average,
as described in the paragraph "QUIZZES" above.
To earn class participation points you must have, register, and use (correctly) an iClicker.
Late arrival to class or early departure from class may result in negative CP points.
Students who habitually arrive late, leave early, or participate in other discourteous activity
during class should expect to have their letter grade reduced by at least a "+/-" factor.
Expect
each class to meet as scheduled unless notified otherwise by a
Mathematics instructor in person at the beginning of the class
period. Failing students cannot receive an incomplete grade.
Inappropriate use of any attendance or quizzing mechanisms used (such as having another student enter your CP points for you) will result in
forfeiture of all your CP points for the semester.
GRADING Your grade is determined entirely by what you do, not by what you need.
Your total score for the course will be determined
by the following formula:
.08H + .17Q + .75T, where H is your homework average, Q is your quiz average, T is the average of your scores on Tests 1, 2, and 3.
Grades will be assigned on this scale (bearing in mind the content of the "Attendance..." paragraph above):
A = 90.00 or higher |
B = 80.00 - 89.99 |
C = 70.00 - 79.99 |
D = 60.00 - 69.99 |
F = 59.99 or lower |
+/- grades will be assigned on a competitive basis; for example, among those students whose total scores are in the 80.00 - 89.99 range, the top 20% (more or less) may be assigned grades of B+ and the bottom 20% (more or less) may be assigned grades of B- (the 20% figure in this example is just for illustration purposes; the actual cut-off will vary according to how scores are distributed); likewise for grades in the other ranges, except that FSU does not have A+ or F+ grades.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY Academic dishonesty includes, but is not
limited to, the giving or receiving of unauthorized assistance or
collaboration within or outside the classroom, the
possession or use of restricted test materials, plagiarism, the use of an iPhone or handheld device during Tests or Quizzes,
or attempts at any of the above. During quizzes or tests, students
may not possess or refer to written information (unless
specifically authorized by the instructor) or receive oral
information. If such information is available to a student during a
quiz or test, a grade of 0 (which cannot be removed) will be
assigned for the work in question.
Academic dishonesty also includes stealing, buying,
selling, or referring to a copy of a Departmental test
before or after it has been administered. By completing a quiz or
test, the student in effect pledges that unauthorized
assistance has been neither given nor received. All violations of
these policies will be reported to the University Judicial Officer
and other appropriate University officials.
A student found in attempting to submit CP points for any other student will risk both students' CP points being forfeited for the semester.
YOUR SCORES ON THE WEB For your convenience, your quiz and test and homework scores will summarized on one
personalized web page (not on Canvas). To protect privacy
your name will not appear on your score page. The url for your personal MGF1106 score page is
http://www.math.fsu.edu/~harris/1106GradePages/YourNineDigitsGoHere.html, where you replace "YourNineDigitsGoHere" with your 9 digit EMPLID.
IMPORTANT NOTE The information on this syllabus is specific
to
MGF1106 Sections 01 - 05;
if you transfer to another section outside of that listed, you must obtain the syllabus
for your new section.
UNIVERSITY-WIDE SYLLABUS STATEMENTS
The following general statements are to be included in every FSU course syllabus. Details specific to this course are stated in preceding paragraphs.
University Attendance Policy
Excused absences include documented illness, deaths in the family and other documented crises, call to active military duty or jury duty, religious holy days,
and official University activities. These absences will be accommodated in a way that does not arbitrarily penalize students who have a valid excuse.
Consideration will also be given to students whose dependent children experience serious illness.
(See the paragraphs "QUIZZES" and "MAKE-UP TESTS" above, for details.)
Academic Honor Policy
The Florida State University Academic Honor Policy outlines the University's expectations for the
integrity of students' academic work, the procedures for resolving alleged violations of
those expectations, and the rights and responsibilities of students and faculty members
throughout the process. Students are responsible for reading the Academic Honor Policy and
for living up to their pledge to ". . . be honest and truthful and . . . [to] strive for personal and
institutional integrity at Florida State University." (Florida State University Academic Honor Policy,
found at http://fda.fsu.edu/Academics/Academic-Honor-Policy.)
Americans With Disabilities Act
Students with disabilities needing academic accommodation should:
(1) register with and provide documentation to the Student Disability Resource Center; and
(2) bring a letter to the instructor indicating the need for accommodation and what type. This should be done during the first week of class.
This syllabus and other class materials are available in alternative format upon request.
