Title: Essential manifolds and macroscopic dimension

Abstract: Gromov introduced the notion of macroscopic dimension to study manifolds that admit metrics with positive scalar curvature. He proposed several problems and conjectures on the subject. We will discuss some of them. In particular, we disprove Gromov's conjecture about macroscopic dimension of essential manifolds.
