Section 1.7. Concept: Linear dependence vs Linear independence. This concept will be needed throughout the course. The section gives various characterizations, and the exercises aim to test this. Exercises: Check if you can do Ex 1-8. Note: for Ex 7-8 no computation is needed because the answer follows directly from Theorem.... Turn in: one of Ex 10 or 12 or 14. Check if you can do Ex 15-20 quickly. If this takes substantial time then that indicates you do not yet know the theorems. In particular: Ex 15,17,18,20 do not require any computation at all if you know the theorems in this section! And for Ex 16,19 see the first box on page 59. So if you know the theorems, then Ex 15-20 should be very little work! Exercises 23-30 and 33-40 are not computational either, instead, they test if you know the theorems. Turn in: Ex 32 (and one of 10, 12, or 14). Memorize the theorems from this section and from previous sections!
