objectives |
In this course we will learn the basic concepts and results of the beautiful theory of
calculus over the complex numbers, including the geometry of elementary complex functions,
complex path integrals and Cauchy's theorem, and applications of the Residue theorem, including
evaluation of improper integrals with complex methods. We will cover chapters 1-8 of the text,
time permitting.

Homework will be assigned regularly and discussed in class. Written homework will not be
graded, but instead is to be assembled into a notebook to be turned in on the day of the
final exam -- I will use these notebooks to help resolve borderline grades. |

There will be two one-hour midterm exams and four short quizzes on dates
to be announced, and a comprehensive final exam at the
University's designated final examination time:
Thursday, December 15, 3-5pm.

grading |
Your course grade will be a weighted average of homework and class participation (10%), quizzes (10%), midterm grades (20% each), and final exam grade (40%). Faithful attendance is expected. Borderline grades will be affected positively by good class participation and negatively by inconsistent attendance. | ||

makeups |
No written makeups are given. An unexcused missed exam receives a zero.
Those with prior permission or sufficient documentation
will substitute an oral exam. |

In this class, you are permitted to work together with classmates on homework problems, but you must turn in only work written by yourself. All exams and any other assignments must reflect only your own work unassisted by others.
University Attendance Policy: Excused absences include documented illness, deaths in the family and other documented crises, call to active military duty or jury duty, religious holy days, and official University activities. These absences will be accommodated in a way that does not arbitrarily penalize students who have a valid excuse.
