REQUIRED TEXT: Algebraic Topology, by Allen Hatcher, Chapter 2. This text may be purchased, but it also may be downloaded free (and legally) from Hatcher's website here.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: In this course, we cover the basics of simplicial and singular homology theory.

PREREQUISITES:  Topology I (MTG 5326) and Topology II (MTG 5327).

HOMEWORK:  I will make weekly homework assignments.   These assignments will be collected and graded.

TESTS:  There will be a midterm test and a final exam.

ATTENDANCE: Attendance will count as 15% of your grade. To calculate your attendance score, I will use the ratio (number of classes attended + number of excused absences)/(total number of class periods). For an absence to be excused, you must bring documentation from a medical clinician (if your reason is medical) or from an FSU faculty member or administrator (if you have an official school-related reason). If you are absent for any other reason, you must clear it with me in advance in order for it to be considered excused. Also, if you are more than ten minutes late without a documented excuse, that will count as an unexcused absence.

COLLABORATION:  I expect each of you to write up and hand in your own work.  However this does NOT mean you are forbidden to discuss the material from the homework among yourselves; in fact you are encouraged to do so.  Any time the work you hand in incorporates someone else's ideas, please give that person credit for his or her contributions.  You will in no way be penalized for these acknowledgements; to the contrary, my respect for you will increase when I see you are willing to give credit to those who deserve it!  The exception to this policy is, of course, that you may not communicate with each other while taking the test and the final exam.

GRADING:
Homework 15% throughout semester
Midterm 30% date to be announced
Attendance 15% throughout semester
Final Exam 40% Tuesday, Dec. 12, 5:30-7:30 PM
Total 100%

INTERNET: Basic information about the class, including this syllabus, current homework assignments and dates of upcoming tests, will be posted on the internet. Just go to my website http://www.math.fsu.edu/~klassen/ and follow the link to this course.

MAKEUP POLICY:  If you miss a class period, you are still responsible for learning the material covered on the day you missed, and also for any work which was assigned on the day you missed.  Late homework will not be accepted unless you bring a medical excuse for the day it was due.  Likewise, if you miss the midterm, you will be allowed to make it up only if you bring a medical excuse stating that you were too sick to come that day.  (If you have some other unavoidable conflict, you must discuss it with me at least two weeks in advance to see if other arrangements can be made.)

ACADEMIC HONOR POLICY: The Florida State University Academic Honor Policy outlines the University's expectations for the integrity of students' academic work, the procedures for resolving alleged violations of those expectations, and the rights and responsibilities of students and faculty members throughout the process. Students are responsible for reading the Academic Honor Policy and for living up to their pledge to "... be honest and truthful and ... [to] strive for personal and institutional integrity at Florida State University." (Florida State University Academic Honor Policy, found at http://dof.fsu.edu/honorpolicy.htm.) If I catch anyone cheating in any way, I will follow the procedures in the Honor Policy.  This situation has arisen in the past and, believe me, it's not worth the risk!

AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT:  Students with disabilities needing academic accommodation should: (1) register with and provide documentation to the Student Disability Resource Center; and (2) bring a letter to the instructor indicating the need for accommodation and what type. This should be done during the first week of class. This syllabus and other class materials are available in alternative format upon request. The Faculty Senate has directed the faculty to add the following paragraph to all Syllabi:

UNIVERSITY ATTENDANCE POLICY: Excused absences include documented illness, deaths in the family and other documented crises, call to active military duty or jury duty, religious holy days, and official University activities. These absences will be accommodated in a way that does not arbitrarily penalize students who have a valid excuse. Consideration will also be given to students whose dependent children experience serious illness.
