Mapping the Human Brain with Mathematics

Dr. Monica K. Hurdal
Florida State University, U.S.A. and
Queensland University of Technology, Australia

A major research topic of the new century is to understand how the brain functions. I will present some of the ways that I am using mathematics to create maps of the brain. This includes localizing neural activing using brain wave (EEG) data and unfolding and flattening the cortical surface to help neuroscientists understand functional activity which is recorded from PET and functional MRI scans.
