Syllabus

  • Are there math topics you want to explore in more depth?
  • Do you want to learn and develop fun mathematical activities outside the scope of your regular classroom environment?
  • Come research and create math activities that can be used in Math Department Outreach efforts!
  • Students will have opportunities to participate in K-12 math outreach outside of the classroom.
  • Course focus will be on Math in Nature, but any topics can be studied and explored in more detail. Bring your own ideas!

This seminar will explore fun math topics of students' choosing. The intent is to research these topics and develop some math activities that can be used in some of the Math Department Outreach events that it hosts for kids in Grades 2-12. The scope of topics is wide open and the intent is that students will pick a few topics and research them. If there are no preferences, we will focus on Math in Nature. Much of the work will be done on your own and the seminar time will be used for vetting ideas, asking questions, and developing topics. As a result, if the meeting time is not appropriate, it may still be possible to register for the seminar. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in some Math Outreach activities in the spring and try out their ideas and activities.

Students are expected to read required material in advance of class and participate in class discussions. Students will be expected to develop at least one activity that can be used in math outreach efforts. Participation in at least one math department outreach activity is expected unless other arrangements have been made. A maximum of 3 absences will be allowed in order to receive a passing grade. This class is graded S/U.
