Course
Objectives

This seminar will explore fun math topics of students' choosing. The intent is to research these topics and develop some math activities that can be used in some of the Math Department Outreach events that it hosts for kids in Grades 2-12. The scope of topics is wide open and the intent is that students will pick a few topics and research them. If there are no preferences, we will focus on Math in Nature. Much of the work will be done on your own and the seminar time will be used for vetting ideas, asking questions, and developing topics. As a result, if the meeting time is not appropriate, it may still be possible to register for the seminar. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in some Math Outreach activities in the fall or spring and try out their ideas and activities.
Eligibility This course is for graduate students. Students should be majoring in a mathematical science (i.e. math, stats, cs, etc.), science, or engineering. Successful completion of Calculus 1 (MAC 2311) is recommended.
Text Book
There is no specific text for the course. Students will read mathematics and scientific papers as needed. If reading is required, you are expected to come to class having read the material in advance.
Grading Students are expected to read required material in advance of class and participate in class discussions. Students will be expected to develop at least one activity that can be used in math outreach efforts. Participation in at least one math department outreach activity is expected unless other arrangements have been made. A maximum of 3 absences will be allowed in order to receive a passing grade. There is no final exam in this course. Grades in the form of S/U (satisfactory/unsatisfactory) will be based on progress and effort made toward completing activities. A grade of I will not be given to avoid a grade of F or to give additional study/research/preparation time. Failure to process a course drop will result in a course grade of F.
Courtesy and Attendance I expect you to get to class on time and not to leave class until I have dismissed it. If you must leave class early, please let me know before class begins. I expect you to attend class regularly. Studies show that students who attend class get higher grades than those who skip classes. A student absent from class bears the full responsibility for all subject matter and procedural information discussed in class.
Class
Participation
I will encourage and expect you to participate in class. Much of the work will be done on your own and the seminar time will be used for vetting ideas, asking questions, and developing topics.
University Attendance Policy Excused absences include documented illness, deaths in the family and other documented crises, call to active military duty or jury duty, religious holy days, and official University activities. These absences will be accommodated in a way that does not arbitrarily penalize students who have a valid excuse. Consideration will also be given to students whose dependent children experience serious illness.
Academic Honor Policy The Florida State University Academic Honor Policy outlines the University's expectations for the integrity of students' academic work, the procedures for resolving alleged violations of those expectations, and the rights and responsibilities of students and faculty members throughout the process. Students are responsible for reading the Academic Honor Policy and for living up to their pledge to ". . . be honest and truthful and . . . [to] strive for personal and institutional integrity at Florida State University." (Florida State University Academic Honor Policy, found at http://fda.fsu.edu/Academics/Academic-Honor-Policy.)
Americans with Disabilities Act Students with disabilities needing academic accommodation should:
(1) register with and provide documentation to the Student Disability Resource Center; and
(2) bring a letter to the instructor indicating the need for accommodation and what type. This should be done during the first week of class.

This syllabus and other class materials are available in alternative format upon request.
