Abstract.
In this talk we will discuss the motivation, features and technical
background of a program called GenPatterns. This software
brings together a number of tools that can be used to
investigate the statistical and complexity properties of
DNA sequences. These features are also amenable to visual
and graphic display. We will discuss the use of the
program to investigate symmetry in the frequencies of
subsequences and their inverted complements and
we will also talk about the use of the program as an educational
resource for teaching undergraduates some basic concepts in
bioinformatics.
