EXAMPLE 1.2.3

Let U = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9}

E = {x|x is an even number}

S = {1, 2, 3, 4}

Draw a Venn diagram that correctly shows the relationship between sets E, S and U.

SOLUTION

First we recognize that E = {2, 4, 6, 8}

Notice that although E and S have some elements in common, neither of those two sets is a subset of the other. This means that the Venn diagram should show that the circles for those two sets are overlapping, but neither circle should be fully contained within the other.
