  Star Office Information

Star Office 5.2 has been network installed for use on the Solaris 8 boxes (list). In order to use it, you will need to set up a a personal installation associated with your user ID. You do this by issuing the command 'soffice' at a command-line prompt, as in:

> soffice

This is also the command you will use to run Star Office in the future, but the first time you issue it, it will set up Star Office for your user ID. The local ID installation will take around 4M of disk space and will create a directory named 'office52' in your home directory.

Once the Star Office installation process starts, do the following:

-----------------------------------------

Click "Next" -> "Next" -> "Accept"

Make sure "Standard Network Installation" is checked and then click "Next".

Just use the default location of "<home-directory>/office52" and then click "Next".

Now click "Complete".

It will ask about the Java Runtime Environment. Leave "Already installed on the system" checked and click "Next".

It will then begin installing the Star Office components to your home directory.

At the end of this there will be a pop-up message about Adabas Installation. Just click "OK" on this for now.

You will also get a message about Star Office being added to the CDE Frontpanel. Those of you using CDE as your working environment will be able to run StarOffice via a new area on the far left of the panel once you restart the workspace manager. This can be done by right-clicking in the desktop (background) area of your screen and picking "Windows->Restart Desktop Manager".

Finally click "Complete" to complete the installation.

-----------------------------------------

You can now run Star Office by typing "soffice" at the command line, or, if using CDE, you can pick it from the front panel menu.

The first time you run Star Office, you will get a pop-up labeled "Autopilot Internet Setup"

Click "Next", and then make sure "Apply all setting automatically" is checked. Click on the Netscape line so that it is highlighted, and then click "Next". Click "Next" one more time and then click "Ok". The default Internet settings will be set up.

The default printer for the initial Star Office setup is "lw" in the grad lab. Other usable department printers appear in the printing dialog box that pops up when you want to print any document.

You can customize your local printing setup at any time by clicking the "Printer Setup" icon on the main Star Office page. However, if you want to make any printer changes, such as setting a new default, make sure you click the "Save Settings Locally" button at the bottom of the printer setup dialog box. You will not have permission to change the global settings, but once you tell Star Office that you want the settings saved locally, you can make whatever changes you need.

Once the settings are saved locally, you can change the default printer by clicking one of the names in the list in the top area and then clicking the "Default Printer" button below the list. You can also remove printers that you never use from your local list by clicking the name of the printer and then clicking "Remove".

Have fun using Star Office!
