eligibility
The student should be a breathing human being and have some expertise in graduate level complex variable theory.
text
There isn't any official text. I am gleaning most of the material from three texts. They are Introduction to Analytic Number Theory and Modular Functions and Dirichlet Series in Number Theory, both by Tom Apostol, and Elliptic Curves by Anthony Knapp.
content
  1. Dirichlet's Theorem on Primes in Arithmetic Progressions
  2. The Prime Number Theorem
  3. Elliptic Functions and the Dedekind Eta Function
  4. Rademacher's Series for the Partition Function
homework
Each student will have a project to prepare and present.
objectives
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to techniques in analytic number theory by presenting three of the major accomplishments of the field--Dirchlet's proof of the infinitude of primes in every arithmetic progression with coprime generators, the Prime Number Theorem, and Rademacher's convergent series for the partition function.
attendance
Attendance is mandatory.
courtesy
Generally, I expect you to get to class on time and not to leave class until I have dismissed it. If you must leave class early, please let me know before class begins.
grading
Your grade in the course will be based on attendance and a project.
