Requirements, Deadlines, and Checklist
for International Applicants
NOTE: All potential applicants are required complete
the mathematics department's online
admissions application (
Online Application).
Doing so is free and will initiate your application folder within the Department of
Mathematics. To
finalize your application you must complete the
university application, which requires a $30 application fee. For
university application forms and instructions, please consult the
Office of Admissions website.
Minimum Requirements for Admission
A bachelor's degree with a strong mathematical component and a GPA of
at least 3.0 (on a scale of 0-4) during the last two years of study. Two
official transcripts are required.
A score of at least 700 on the quantitative portion and at least 1100 on the
combined
verbal and quantitative portions of GRE. Take the GRE as soon as possible
and have an official score report sent to Florida State University. Write
directly to
Educational Testing Service, P.O. Box 6000, Princeton, NJ 08541-6000 for
test times and applications.
Four letters of recommendation. The letters
should address your
suitability for doing graduate work in at least one of our degree
programs. There is no form for these recommendations. They should be
written as letters on official letterhead, and
mailed directly from the recommenders to the Department of Mathematics.
Minimum Requirements for a Teaching Assistantship
In addition to the
above requirements:
Demonstration of proficiency in spoken English.
Note:
By Florida law, non-native English
speakers must pass the TOEFL before admission to the University.
Minimum Requirements for a Fellowship
In addition to the
above requirements:
Achievement of 3.5 GPA (on a scale of 0-4)
in all college work attempted.
A score of 1300 on the combined verbal and quantitative
portions of the GRE.
Deadlines
For full consideration by the Graduate Committee,
international applications should be received approximately nine months
prior to the desired date of entrance: January 1 for Fall term, May 1 for
Spring term, and September 1 for Summer term. Late applications will
still be considered but complications regarding timely completion of
paperwork may delay processing of the application. Such a delay could
cause an application to be rejected for the desired term of entry.
Checklist
- Complete the math department's online application form.
- Submit your university admission application
accompanied by check or money order of $30.00 payable to FSU.
- Request that official transcripts of all college and graduate work attempted be sent from
your institution(s) to FSU.
- Request that official GRE scores be sent from Educational Testing Service to
FSU. Institution code for FSU: 5219
- Request that official TOEFL scores be sent from Educational Testing
Service to FSU.
- Request that four letters of recommendation be sent directly to
Ms. Dena McDaniel

Items 2 through 5 on the Checklist should be submitted directly to the
Florida State University Office of Admissions. For detailed forms and
instructions, please consult the
Office of Admissions website. In addition, if you can send a photocopy
of your transcripts (not necessarily an official copy) directly to Ms. Dena
McDaniel in the Department of
Mathematics at the address given above in item 6, that will help us
process your application more efficiently.
