Financial support is offered through teaching assistantships, research
assistantships, and fellowships.
Teaching Assistantships
Many students, about 85% of those who receive financial aid,
are supported as teaching assistants (TAs). Current
stipends range from $12,500 to $15,000 for nine months, with the
amount depending
on the level of teaching duties and academic progress towards
a degree. For TAs who wish to study during all or part the summer, funding is usually available for that portion of the summer during which they are present and studying (though summer funding is not guaranteed, and can vary from one year to the next).
TA duties include recitation-style instruction, exam proctoring, and
solo teaching (for advanced TAs). The time commitment is
approximately 12-15 hours per week.
Assistantships include a waiver of tuition and most fees.
The latest tuition amounts are detailed at
Tuition Rates.
Research Assistantships
These are similar to teaching assistantships, differing
in the duty assignment and availability. Normally RAs work closely with
a faculty member, or members, on a research project. Funding
for research assistantships is generated through research
grants.
Fellowships
The University Fellowship, for new and continuing Masters and Ph.D. students, carries a stipend of $18,000 for one 9-month academic year. The Presidential Fellowship, for new doctoral students only, carries a stipend of $23,000 per academic year for four years. Both of these fellowships also provide tuition waivers and some funds towards health insurance. No duties are required but
fellowship holders must be full-time degree-seeking students during the tenure of the award.
These awards are highly competitive. For more information, including applications and instructions, visit
