Abstract. Splines are used in shape analysis and many other
disciplines for interpolation, approximation and regression. However,
most spline methods have been focused on Euclidean domains. As data
modeled on manifolds occur often, constructing spline with manifold
domains and developing effective computational methods for such spline
are desirable.
In this talk, we will present a general theoretical framework for manifold
domains. Additionally, we will present an algorithm to compute such splines.
The advantages of this framework will be demonstrated through various examples
on domains with and without boundary by comparing performance with other
commonly used methods. This method has been applied to facial
analysis using dense surface models of human facial shape. These models
not only provide dramatic visualizations, but
also allow accurate modeling of 3D facial shape variation.
