Instructions for accessing online lectures:
If at any stage, you have a problem, see the bottom of these instructions (the paragraph that
starts "In case of problems,...").
Well before the first lecture (if you did not do it before the first lecture, do it now):
log into Canvas
go to our course (MAC 2311...)
to the left, look for the link "Zoom", and click on it
at this point, Zoom will not do much except open a window; if it asks you to dowload something, please do so; after this, you may explore Zoom or just logout of Zoom and Canvas
(you are set for now if the first lecture meeting has not started; please do not ask me any questions about Zoom if you reach this stage, since I will explain things in the first lecture).
if you run into problems doing the above, then
log out of Canvas and repeat the above procedures using a different browser (such as explorer, safari, firefox, chrome, etc.; if one of the browsers works, you may have to stick to it for future online lectures).
On the day of the lecture:
I will start the meeting 5 minutes before class time (though the lecture itself will start at 12:22).
If you can, do the procedure above (but do not logout of Zoom) up to 5 minutes before class begins so you are ready for the meeting, but at the latest, start it at 12:20.
Once you are in Zoom, you should see the option to click on "Join" our meeting (you may first have to click on "Upcoming meetings");
if this does not work, click on "Zoom" again and try again.
When you click on "Join", it may open up a window where it asks you to dowload something; if yes, please do so. If you run into problems doing the download (e.g., if nothing happens for a long time), then log out of Canvas and repeat the above procedures using a different browser (such as explorer, safari, firefox, chrome, etc.; if one of the browsers works, you may have to stick to it for future online lectures).
Now there should be a small wondow where there should be a button that says "Open link"; click on that.
Then it might open another window, where there should be a button that says "Join with Computer Audio"; click on that. At this time, you should be in the meeting and will see a big window with either me on video or some writing that will tell you that the meeting is on.
Once you are in the meeting, if it is before the lecture starts (around 12:22):
You should access the toolbar at the bottom of the window; if you do not see it, move the mouse close to the bottom, and it should appear (if it does not appear, you may have to move or shrink the window; you can do the latter by clicking on "View options" at the top of the window).
On the toolbar, all the way to the left are buttons that say "Mute" and "Stop Video"; click on them. This will make sure that noone else can hear or see you (note that the lectures are recorded); you can always reverse this by clicking on the same buttons that will now say "Unmute" and "Start Video" (the Unmute will work only if I give permission to everyone to speak).
There is also an button called "Chat". Click on that to open a chat window on the right. Once the lecture starts (around 12:22), please do not write anything in the chat window unless I give you permission to do so. Note that I will generally not type anything in the chat window, and if you see anything that seems to come from me, please ignore it (unless I say otherwise by audio).
On the toolbar, there will also be a button that says "Participants";
you may click on that and it will open a the window on the right to show who is in the meeting.
When the lecture starts (around 12:22):
You should hear my voice (if you have not already);
if you don't hear my voice, then check that the speakerphone on your device (e.g., computer) is on or the volume is not too low.
In the meeting, I will not be able to hear you since I would have muted all participants.
If you want to ask a question, you will have to wait till I ask "Does anyone have a question?" and then
you need to do the following:
on the toolbar, click on "Participants" (unless you already have), and that will open a the window on the right, somewhere there should be a "Raise Hand" icon; click on it, and I should be able to see it on my computer.
I will then call out the name of the person whose raised hand I see first, and then ask them to click "Unmute" and ask their question (others should not click on "Unmute", since then I may not hear the question well enough; i.e., wait for your turn).
In case of problems, if it is well before the lecture, email me (agashe (the symbol at) math.fsu.edu)
(mainly to let me know, even though I may not be able to help you since that is not my expertise) and click
here to go to the ITS help page (which has their
contact information at the bottom, if you need it).
In case of problems during the lecture (12:15--1:10), email Tejas (tmn17b (the symbol at) my.fsu.edu) telling him what happened and he will try to get back to you (but the reply may take time, so keep an eye on your email for the rest of the lecture time). While waiting to hear from him, you can click
here and look under the section "Student Resources" towards the bottom of the page or click
here to go to the ITS help page (which has their
contact information at the bottom).
Also, note that all lectures will be recorded, so at worst you will be able to view the lecture later even if you did not get to participate live in it; but you should definitely try to fix things so that you can attend at least one lecture, since we will be doing similar things for recitation, office hours, tests, etc.
