Abstract. Shape often plays an important rote in data analysis. For example, in a collection of shapes, how can we define the average shape? Can we characterize the most common deviations from that average? Can we use shape to make useful predictions? For example, can the shape of a tumor help predict how serious it is? Can the shape of an anatomical organ be used to diagnose whether the organ is healthy or diseased? One way to analyze these situations is to endow the set of all shapes with the structure or a Riemannian manifold, and then understand the geometry of this manifold. We explore several ways of accomplishing this!
