Abstract. After briefly introducing elliptic curves, we will describe the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, a part of which is one of the Clay millenial prize problems. This conjecture gives important information about the set of rational solutions to the equation defining the elliptic curve as well as some other invariants attached to the curve. Finally, we will discuss briefly our work on the conjecture and on related topics.
