Abstract. The dynamics of polynomial and rational maps in complex dimension one has developed into a rich and interesting subject. These maps, however, are not invertible. So in for the dynamics of invertible maps we let X be a compact, complex manifold of complex dimension 2, and we let f be an automorphism of X. We discuss the dynamics of (f,X), that is, the behavior of the iterates f^n as n -->infinity. We describe the entropy of a map. We give examples of automorphisms of positive entropy and survey the tools for studying such maps.
