Abstract. Homotopy theory originated in topology with the study of topological spaces, but with Quillen's development of model categories, it became a much wider subject. In the last few years, several other, more general models for homotopy theories have also become important. Also known as (infinity, 1)-categories, they are significant for their applications in algebra, topology, and algebraic geometry, as well as for their role in understanding the interplay between homotopy theory and higher categories.
