Abstract. Controlled topology is a version of algebraic topology in which global deformations are replaced by deformations which are "small" in some appropriate sense. This notion grew out of classical work of Kirby-Siebenmann on triangulation of manifolds, but it has proven to have numerous applications inside and outside of topology. In my talk, I will give an outline of the theory and talk about some of its applications.
