Abstract. The theory of the wave equation is classical and goes back to Newton and d'Alembert. The theory of general hyperbolic equations is more recent and is due to Leray. The theory of stable difference approximations of hyperbolic equations is more recent still. The key to them all are a priori estimates of quadratic functionals that represent energy.
