Abstract. A posteriori error estimators of the recovery type are extremely popular in the engineering community. Wrong choices of the quantity to recover and the space used for recovery will lead to inaccurate error estimators. For example, for elliptic interface equations, the famous Zienkiewicz-Zhu error estimator will over-refine regions with very small error.

In this talk, by using the intrinsic continuities of the underlying problem and the properties of different finite element discretizations, we present a unified framework of constructing robust recovery-based error estimators for various finite element discretizations of a wide class of differential equations.
