Title: Ill-Posedness of Some Water Wave Models

Abstract. We review one of the modern methods of deriving approximate equations for the propagation of water waves. Upon applying this to the full inviscid problem, a hierarchy of models appears. Remarkably, these appear to be ill-posed in Hadamard's classical sense. Similar results obtain for both shallow and deep water situations.

Some preliminary suggestions about how to counter this state of affairs will be discussed.
