Abstract. This talk is about a relation between singularity theory and complex geometry inspired by physics. The correspondence in the title was proposed in physics literature more than 20 years ago and suggests relation between invariants of singularities of complex polynomials and invariants of compact manifolds of certain type. I will discuss with another correspondence due to John McKay relating invariants of group actions and resolutions of singularities of quotients and its role in proving and extending Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi Yau correspondence.
